Chile rescue 33 2010

The collapse of the San José mine occurred on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at around 14:30, leaving 33 miners trapped at a depth of 720 meters for 69 days.1 The mine, located in the Chilean commune of Caldera, 30 km northwest of the city of Copiapó, was operated by the company San Esteban Primera S.A. This has been some of the most intense and longest journalistic coverage I have participated in. I was present from Aug. 10 until Oct. 15, establishing bonds that still endure with many of the family members of the 33 miners with whom I shared moments of joy and tears. A photo book together with AP Chilean photographer Luis Hidlago is the result of these months, in addition to numerous publications in international and local magazines.
